Revere’s Heyn brings teams together for charity

RICHFIELD, Ohio – Revere football coach Phil Heyn and the rest of the Minutemen’s football program were looking to do something different.

This time of year it’s routine for schools to pair off against each other for passing scrimmages and 7-on-7 drills as teams begin their preparation for the coming football season, set to begin Aug. 25 in Ohio.  Revere was no different; they had set up a scrimmage with Norton for just over a week away, but they wanted to do something more.

Heyn knew there had to be a way to get the necessary work in, but also have a little more fun and learn valuable lessons about the importance of giving.

Enter the First Annual Revere Football Charity 7-on-7 Extravaganza on Friday, July 29, starting at 10 a.m. at Revere High School.  What was once a simple scrimmage is now a six-team tournament with skills competitions, raffles and a full day of activity that will support Rush for a Cause.

In addition to Revere and Norton, Tallmadge, Alliance Marlington, Olmsted Falls and Northwestern also will participate in the event.

The event will be free for the teams and anyone who wants to attend and watch the activities.  The fundraiser will rely on donations, a 50-50 raffle and proceeds at the concession stand to raise money for Rush for a Cause.

Rush for a Cause is a charity started by former Brecksville-Broadview Heights football player Matt Galland to raise community and financial support for tragically and severely injured athletes and promote injury prevention.

In addition to a series of varsity and junior varsity games, culminating in a championship game for each division, athletes will participate in fastest man, kicker, quarterback and team skills challenges throughout the day.  There also will be games set up for fans to compete in.
