MLB issues discipline for Boston-Baltimore brawl

NEW YORK – Major League Baseball on Thursday issued its rulings on the incidents that occurred during last weekend’s series between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles.

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Orioles relief pitcher Kevin Gregg both received four-game suspensions and undisclosed fines for touching off the most serious of a pair of battles between the clubs at Fenway Park.

After hitting a fly ball in the eighth inning of Boston’s 10-3 victory last Friday, Gregg yelled at the BoSox slugger to run the bases. Ortiz then made his way towards the pitcher and the two shoved each other, both missing with wild punches just as the dugouts and bullpens emptied.

Gregg will start his suspension Thursday as the Orioles begin their second half of the season against the Cleveland Indians and Ortiz’s suspension will begin Friday when the Red Sox visit Tampa Bay, unless the players file an appeal.

Orioles pitcher Mike Gonzalez was also issued a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for throwing at Ortiz during Sunday’s series finale. Warnings had already been issued earlier in the game before Gonzalez threw a pitch behind the back of Ortiz in the sixth inning.

Unless appealed, Gonzalez’s suspension is scheduled to start July 18 when the Orioles host the Red Sox.

Baltimore manager Buck Showalter received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for Gonzalez’s intentional actions. Showalter’s suspension will also be served during Thursday’s game.

In addition to the suspensions, Baltimore’s Jim Johnson, along with Boston’s Jarrod Saltalamacchia and John Lackey were fined undisclosed amounts for their actions during the series.

Johnson and Saltalamacchia were disciplined for their respective roles during another bench-clearing incident in the Saturday contest, while Lackey was fined for intentionally throwing a pitch at Orioles first baseman Derrek Lee, also in that game.
