Bell, Kaplan lead Canoe Club to championship
Amy Bell and Keith Kaplan paddled to first place in two canoeing events as the Albion College Canoe Club topped the team standings in the Southeast Canoe/Kayak Collegiate Championships held March 19-20 on the Tuckasegee River in Dillsboro, N.C.
In scoring like cross country where the low score wins, Albion finished with seven points to easily splash away the competition from Warren Wilson (N.C.) College, Brevard (N.C.) College, North Greenville (S.C.) University, Georgia State University, Hollins (Va.) University, and Liberty (Va.) University.
Bell and Kaplan paddled to victory in the mixed canoe competition, crossing the finish line in 20 minutes, 53 seconds, and they were members of the team relay. Erica Ahlich, David Huggins, Lisa Palaian, and Alli Wilburn completed the squad that posted a time of 35:58.
Ahlich added a first-place finish in women’s canoe, completing the race in 25:24, nearly three minutes ahead of Palaian in second.
Pat Wagner and Huggins finished one-two, respectively, in the men’s canoe and Wilburn paddled her way to first place in women’s canoe.
