Heather Lewis (coach: Martin Bell) was in red hot form in unseasonable conditions at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup in Saransk, Russia (12-13 May).

The 10-strong Aviva Great Britain & Northern Ireland squad raced in temperatures of 30 degrees plus on a tough undulating course.

The intensity of the sun was a real challenge for the British girls in the junior 10km. However, Heather Lewis acclimatised extremely well to secure 23rd spot in a time of 50.38 – only 45 seconds outside her personal best. International debutants Tash Webster (Martin Bell) and Ellie Dooley (Andi Drake) found the conditions too much and both 16-year-olds did not finish the race, with Webster retiring through injury.

Aurora slips past Hudson to play in district final against Stow

BOARDMAN, Ohio — They say softball is a game of inches. The Aurora softball team is grateful that the ruler was in its favor on Monday afternoon during the Struthers District semifinal. Aurora hung on to beat Hudson 3-2 and advance to Tuesday’s district final game against Stow. Two plays in the bottom of the seventh inning, by inches, went Aurora’s way and frustrated the Lady Explorers. The first came with Aurora ahead 3-1. Hudson senior center fielder Hannah Driscoll was on second (hit by pitch), and senior pitcher Casey Brown was on first (walk) when senior third baseman Shelby Bitter came to home plate to face Aurora’s junior pitcher Sarah Petrash. The left-handed hitting Bitter sent a drive to center field. The ball hit the fence on the fly, missing a home run by 4-to-6 inches. Instead of clearing the bases and giving Hudson a win, only Driscoll was able to score, and Brown was held up at third on the double by Bitter. Aurora head Get more…

Brad Brownell Announces 2012 Summer Camp Offerings

CLEMSON, SC – Men’s basketball coach Brad Brownell has announced openings for both of his summer camps, the boys individual/overnight camp held June 17-20 as well as the team camp held June 22-24. Brownell and his coaching staff will be in charge of instruction for both camps, which will be held on the Clemson University campus.

The boys individual/overnight camp will be held Sunday, June 17 through Wednesday, June 20. Three different packages are offered for campers. The rate for campers requiring room and board is $440, which includes meals provided at the dining halls. The rate for commuter campers is $300. Lunch and dinner will be provided for commuters.

OAKLAND – Francisco Cordero might have 329 career saves, but he has no illusions about the precarious spot hes in.

Ive got to pitch better or Im going to find myself out of (the closer) situation, or worse, maybe out of the team, he said Tuesday night after blowing his third consecutive save opportunity in a 7-3 Oakland Athletics walk-off win over the Blue Jays.

Ive got to do my job. Ive got to do it or Im not going to have a job at all. Youve got a team that battles and battles and gives me a lead in the ninth inning and I just blew it again. Its my third blown save in a row.

I didnt make any good pitches tonight.

Albion Mourns Passing of Ron Springer, ’66

Ron Springer, ’66, an all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association football performer in 1964 and 1965 and the league’s co-MVP in 1965, has passed away at age 68. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 20th round of the 1966 NFL Draft. Alabama baseball struggles continue

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WALA) – Tennessee got a two-out, two run single by Zach Osborne in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 5-3 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the series finale from Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Sunday. With the win, the Volunteers completed the Southeastern Conference series sweep of the Tide.

In the decisive sixth inning, Tennessee (18-10, 5-4 SEC) got the leadoff runner aboard when Davis Morgan singled to left. Pinch runner Nick Powell stole second, and after a strikeout, UA starting pitcher Jon Keller walked Chris Fritts, ending the day for Keller. Trey Pilkington entered and loaded the bases when he hit Chris Pierce with a pitch.

The tough road quarterback Nick Crissman has followed will now lead him away from UCLA.

Crissman, who is healthy for the first time in his college career, will graduate in June and transfer to another school. UCLA officials have granted him a release to talk with other schools. He will be immediately eligible to play since he has graduated.

Richmond Horse Trials gearing up

Richmond Horse Trials will be adding to their highly successful and well regarded events this year, with Intermediate Classes to Richmond(1), to be run for the first time on Friday May 11, 2012.

Course building is well under way, and will include the provision of a new open ditch complex for use by Novice, as well as Intermediate Classes.

British Team regular, Nicola Wilson has already confirmed that she will be attending. The Intermediate Classes will run on Friday morning, allowing competitors an early run before continuing on down to Chatsworth. After walking the course with Event Organiser, Paul Hodgson, Nicola enthused “How great it is to have a NEW Intermediate in Yorkshire in May. It is a lovely flowing course, a good course to step up from Novice with some educational elements.”

Technical Advisor, Douglas Weymouth, is also enthusiastic, describing the course as ‘promising to be a free flowing galloping track including a nice balance of introductory combinations. There are some really solid and inviting obstacles and the whole feel of the course should provide a great starting point for those wishing to move up to this level.’

British Eventing’s Regional Co-ordinator for Scotland and the North, Frances Hay-Smith, is delighted that the Hodgsons have opened up new ground for both the Novice and the Intermediate courses. LOS ANGELES – A group spear-headed by former basketball great Earvin Magic Johnson agreed to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team for a record $2 billion, team owner Frank McCourt announced on Tue sday, capping a two-year drama that started with McCourts divorce and wound its way through bankruptcy court.

The buyers under the deal, unveiled hours before the storied franchise was scheduled to hold an auction with three bidders, were led by the investment banking firm Guggenheim Partners. Mark R. Walter, chief executive officer of Guggenheim Capital, will be controlling partner of the ownership group.

Women’s Tennis Improves to 2-0 in MIAA

All six singles players won in straight sets as the Albion College women’s tennis team improved to 2-0 against its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals with an 8-1 victory over Saint Mary’s College. Katie Blumberg picked up the most impressive win, defeating her opponent at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Ever given up hope on something and by the grace of God and ON HIS TIMING, he granted your prayer on the 23rd hour. This 23rd hour happened to be at 1pm yesterday afternoon, I got a call from our sports information guy, Phil (Sikes)…now, I was curious as to who was in the college dunk contest and I had only seen about 5 names released out of 8 so seeing Phil’s name pop up on my phone raised an eyebrow. The thought flashed my mind but I quickly brushed it off so that I didn’t get my hopes up.
