Orioles sinking again in Baltimore
TORONTO – The injection of energy that accompanied the arrival of Buck Showalter as manager of the Baltimore Orioles last July 29 seems to have run its course.
Showalter inherited a listless outfit that had managed just 32 wins in their first 105 ballgames in 2010, then whipped them the rest of the way home to a 34-23 record, second best to the Phillies in all of baseball during that time period.
After making some high-profile off-season moves to improve their offence, spring training this year brought a chorus of bright predictions for the Os, who havent had a winning season since 1997.
Crestwood’s Micky Cook can play — and at many spots
MANTUA, Ohio – Micky Cook doesn’t play every position on the football field – and play them very well, we might add.
It just seems that way.
According to second-year Red Devils coach Chris Kosiorek, maybe the only position area where Cook doesn’t fit in is at defensive line. Other than that, it’s game on.

Injured New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana threw a 15-minute bullpen session Sunday in Miami and could begin a minor-league rehab stint this week.
Santana, who has missed the entire season while recovering from shoulder surgery, threw 45 pitches prior to the Mets game against the Florida Marlins.
“I felt good overall,” Santana told MLB.com. “I think all the work that we have been doing is paying off.
NCAA proposes broader agent definition
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An NCAA panel recommends broadening the definition of agents to close the loophole that allowed Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton to keep playing despite his father’s pay-for-play scheme.
The Division I Amateurism Cabinet is sponsoring legislation that would include family members and other third parties who shop an athlete’s services to schools for financial gain. The proposal was announced Tuesday on the NCAA’s Web site.
The NCAA determined that Cecil Newton – Cam’s father – shopped his son’s services to Mississippi State when Cam Newton was being recruited out of junior college.
Cam Newton was reinstated after a one-day suspension because the NCAA found he didn’t know about the pay-for-play scheme.
